(from Calder report)
Jockey Manoel Cruz rode his 1,000th winner in North America on Saturday when guiding George's Dance to victory in the thirteenth and final race at Calder Race Course.

The native of Brazil has actually won more than twice that number during his career.

He was the leading jockey several times in his native Brazil before first coming to the United States in 2000.

After a trial here, he returned to stay in 2002.

His South American record is not counted in this country's statistics compiled by Equibase.

The 35-year-old was the leading jockey at Calder in 2003 and the leader at Tampa Bay Downs in 2002.

He is currently second in the jockey standings at Calder behind Eddie Castro.
