Emma-Jayne Wilson, Woodbine's leading rider, teams with a familiar partner, Classic Stamp, in the $336,000 Bell Canadian Stakes (Can-II), one of two undercard features on Sunday's Atto Mile (Can-I) program at the Toronto oval.
Five-year-old Classic Stamp could give Wilson, who has 104 wins as of Sept. 15, her first added-money score. Classic Stamp, a Sovereign Award finalist for top older turf female in 2004, won this 1 1/8-mile turf race last year.
"The first time I saw her, she was a two-year-old," said Wilson of the daughter of Regal Classic
. "She was really fuzzy and big. She was a good-looking kid.
"I have her first win picture on my wall and her first stakes win picture on my wall," she continued. "When she was with (trainer) C.C. Hopmans – I was freelancing – I would breeze her for him. I knew her like the back of my hand."
Now Wilson, in just her first full-year of riding, has a chance to return Classic Stamp to the winner's circle.
In their first effort together on Aug. 27, Wilson and the Darwin Banach-trained Ontario-bred missed by a nose to Ambitious Cat, whom she'll face once again this weekend.
Classic Stamp, a lifetime winner of five races and over $750,000 in earnings, has once again hooked some serious competition in the Canadian, including 2003 Ontario Colleen Stakes champion Shaconage and two other U.S. invaders, Natalie Beach and Spotlight.
"There are some tough horses, but on her best day, she's as good as they come," said Wilson. "We'll just let her run her race. The best thing about her is just how easy she goes. She's got a stride that seems 60 feet long. It's effortless."
Wilson, who keeps a list of goals in a book she frequently updates, is hoping she can cross off one of the entries after this Sunday.
"One of the goals is to win a stakes race this year. It would be a perfect conclusion to the book to do it with her. She makes my skin tingle. I love her. She's the greatest."$336,000 Bell Canadian Stakes (Can-II), fillies and mares 3 & up, 1 1/8 miles (turf)
