California Relief Campaign Tops $250,000

The "Racing With Heart" fundraising campaign being conducted by the California horseracing industry will continue indefinitely at various racetracks and wagering locations throughout the state in support of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Approximately $250,000 has been collected so far in the Racing With Heart campaign. Over the long Labor Day weekend, jockeys, horsemen, and fans at Del Mar – aided by matching funds from the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club – raised $100,000 in the relief effort, including donations mailed to Del Mar, designated for the American Red Cross.

Some notable on-going efforts within the industry are:

· Collection sites for non-perishable items that will be transported to the disaster areas on Tuesday have been established at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Fairplex Park in Pomona, and Bay Meadows Race Course in San Mateo.

· Racing With Heart will be part of the larger on-going relief effort during the entire run of the L.A. County Fair in Pomona. More than $100,000 has been raised so far by LACF.

· The Oak Tree Racing Association is planning a major fund-raising activity during its upcoming meet, which will include the sale of signed Fred Stone posters.

· Individuals within the horseracing industry are continuing to donate some of their prize money to the relief effort.

· The chaplains at California racetracks are collecting contributions and encouraging owners, trainers, and jockeys to commit future purse earnings in the ongoing effort.
