Washington Yearling Sale Up in Major Categories

The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders' Association's annual yearling sale Sept. 6 showed increases in gross, average, and median.

The sale company reported 150 yearlings were sold for $2,781,000, an average of $18,546 and a median of $14,250. Another 43 head, 22.3% of those offered, were listed as not sold.

The gross was up 9.2% from last year, when 151 yearlings brought $2,546,800. The average was up 10% from $16,866 and the median increased 9.6% from $13,000.

The highest price came early in the sale when a colt by Capote out of the River Special mare Lofty Heir was purchased by agent Mary Knight for $105,000. Consigned by Woods Creek Training Center, agent, the colt's second dam is graded stakes winner Johnica, by Stage Door Johnny.

A filly by Tribunal brought $100,000 from Ron Crockett. Sold by Griffin Place, she is out of the stakes winning Magesterial mare Bold Magestrate and a half-sister to champion Washington filly Best Judgement (by Demons Begone).
