The Maktoums will try to keep a major group I prize "all in the family" this weekend when the highly regarded Proclamation takes on Goodricke and 15 others in the William Hill Sprint Cup at Haydock on Saturday. The steel-gray King's Best colt ran in the colors of Princess Haya of Jordan for the first time when winning the group I Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in July. Goodricke represents the princess' husband, Sheikh Mohammed, in the six-furlong contest. In his last start, the three-year-old Bahamian Bounty colt finished second by a half length to the classy Whipper in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (Fr-I) at Deauville.

Proclamation will again have the services of Frankie Dettori, who rode the colt to victory in the listed Empire Property Group Cup S. (registered as the Heron Stakes) in May. The charismatic jockey recently returned to riding after breaking his collarbone, and replaces Mick Kinane, who is on the sidelines with a broken wrist.

Other contenders include Somnus, who will compete in this race for a third straight year. The Tim Easterby-trained colt won this event in 2003 and fell just a head short in last year's renewal. La Cucaracha, the speedy filly from the stable of Barry Hills, will also be trying to add to her group I collection. She won the five-furlong Nunthorpe Stakes (Eng-I) in her last start. Michael Hills, son of the trainer, has the return call. His brother, Richard, will be aboard stablemate Etlaala, who was third in the group I July Cup.

Also on Saturday afternoon, the brilliant filly Ouija Board was set to make her highly anticipated return in the 12-furlong September Stakes at Newmarket. However, the 4-year-old filly will now miss the group III event, due to an unsatisfactory scope Wednesday morning. The champion filly has been postward only once this season, sustaining an injury in the group I Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Trainer Ed Dunlop is hopeful that the Cape Cross filly will bounce back quickly enough for a run in the group I Prix Vermeille at Longchamp on September 11. The Prix Vermeille is run at the same mile and a half distance as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I), which has been a major target for the filly this season. A return to the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships will follow, with either a defense of her title in the Emirates Airline Filly & Mare Turf (gr. I), or a try at open company in the John Deere Turf (gr. I).

Although the September Stakes has lost its star filly, several classy colts still make this an intriguing race. Godolphin will send out multiple stakes winner Mamool. The six-year-old horse by In the Wings won this event last year and used it as a springboard for tilts at the Arc and the Melbourne Cup (Aus-I). It is very likely that a good showing here will warrant a return trip to both Longchamp and Flemington. Cherry Mix, who also races under the Godolphin banner, will be making his first start in five months. The four-year-old finished a bang-up second to Bago in the 2004 Arc de Triomphe. The son of Linamix was last seen at Nad al Sheba, where he finished tenth in the group I Dubai Sheema Classic.
