Christine White, who has served as interim Michigan racing commissioner since January, has been appointed racing commissioner.
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced White's appointment Aug. 31. White most recently served as deputy director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and is a former administrative officer with the United States Department of Agriculture Veterinary Services. She holds a bachelors of arts in political science from St. Mary's College of Notre Dame.
White was appointed for a term that expires Dec. 31, 2008. She succeeds R. Robert Geake, whose term expired Dec. 31, 2004.
As racing commissioner, White is charged with ensuring the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the conduct, safety, security, growth and integrity of pari-mutuel wagering and horseracing in this state.
The appointment stands confirmed unless disapproved by the Senate within 60 days.
The Michigan racing commissioner oversees Thoroughbred racing at Great Lakes Downs, mixed-meet racing at Mount Pleasant Meadows, and Standardbred racing at five harness tracks.
