Bohemia Stable's Kelso, the reigning Horse of the Year, was sent off at 1-2 odds in his first start of the season in an allowance race at Monmouth Park on June 29, 1965. The 8-year-old finished third, less than a length behind winner Cachito and runner-up Communique. Kelso was last in the eight-horse field after a half-mile was completed in the six-furlong test and showed speed in the stretch before the rally came up short. In a limited campaign, Kelso won half of his six starts in 1965.
