Group stakes winner Mingun, a 5-year-old son of A.P. Indy
out of the mighty Miesque has been retired from racing and will enter stud next season at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky. His opening fee will be $7,500 live foal.
Bred in Kentucky by Flaxman Holdings and raced by the Niarchos family, Mingun won three of eight starts and earned $208,818. The last start of his career was his only one in the United States, a fourth-place finish behind Leroidesanimaux in the Citation Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park last November.
His three wins came during his 3-year-old campaign in Ireland. After a runner-up effort in his only start at 2, Mingun, he started off 2003 with a solid maiden win at Leopardstown going a mile. He then won back-to-back stakes, taking the one-mile Budweiser Celebration Stakes at the Curragh by 2 1/2 lengths June 29 and then won the Meld Stakes (Ire-III) at 1 1/4 miles July 26.
Later that year he ran fourth in the Juddmonte International Stakes (Eng-I). He was trained by Aidan O'Brien.
"We are pleased by add Mingun to our stallion roster for 2006," Farish said in a release. "He showed tremendous ability as a racehorse and his magnificent pedigree and excellent conformation mark him as a terrific stallion prospect."
Leading sire of 2003 A.P. Indy
currently ranks third in progeny earnings this year. Seattle Slew's Horse of the Year has nine stakes winners this year, seven of which are graded. In all, A.P. Indy
has sired 78 stakes winners and has several sons making a splash as sires themselves like Pulpit
, Malibu Moon
, Golden Missile
, Stephen Got Even
, and Old Trieste.
Miesque, the dam of Mingun, won 10 grade/group I races in her brilliant racing career including back-to-back runnings of the Breeders' Cup Mile (1987-88). Mingun is a half-brother to four stakes winners including champion East of the Moon and the classic-winning top sire Kingmambo
Miesque is a daughter of Nureyev.
