Hurricane Katrina Forces Calder to Cancel Friday Card

Calder Race Course was forced to cancel its live racing card on Friday after Hurricane Katrina, a category one storm, punished much of South Florida overnight and into the early morning hours. The hurricane caused power outages to over 1 million residents and businesses, including Calder. Power to the track has been restored and Calder plans to conduct simulcast wagering Friday.

It is the second time this season that Calder has had to cancel a race day due to the effects of a hurricane. Last month, Hurricane Dennis forced the track to postpone one of its signature events, the Summit of Speed, from July 9 to July 10.

Hurricane Katrina packed powerful winds that scattered debris across the region. Cleanup efforts at Calder are already underway. There were no reports of injuries at the track and only minor property damage.

Racing at Calder is expected to resume on Saturday with a 12-race card. The $100,000 Aspidistra Handicap has been rescheduled for Labor Day, Sept. 5. Friday's (Aug. 26) races will be run on Monday, Aug. 29.
