Del Mar stewards fined Corey Nakatani and Patrick Valenzuela $500 apiece Wednesday for fighting in the jockeys' room following a race Monday in which Rene Douglas drew a three-day suspension.
The altercation between Nakatani, who did not ride in the disputed second race on the program, and Valenzuela reportedly took place after the two exchanged heated remarks following the disqualification of Douglas' horse, Cheiron.
Cheiron, trying to rally between horses in upper stretch came out under left-handed whipping by Douglas and bumped Valenzuela's mount, Grafton, who was knocked off balance and stumbled. Cheiron eventually finished fourth and was placed behind Grafton, who came home last in the field of five. After crossing the wire, Grafton did not return to be unsaddled and was vanned off.
St Averil won the allowance optional claiming race worth $74,620.
Stewards also handed David Flores a three-day suspension for an incident in Monday's fourth race. Flores' mount Rosy Lea finished third in the $53,000 maiden special event for 2-year-old fillies and was disqualified to seventh for coming in near the sixteenth pole and crowding Quiet Kim, ridden by Douglas. Quiet Kim was forced to take up.
Douglas and Flores are to serve their days Aug. 29 and 31 and Sept. 1.
