Adirondack winner Folklore looks to grab second Spa win in Friday's Spinaway Stakes.
A cast of seven fillies will line up for distinction Friday in the 114th running of the Spinaway Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-olds at Saratoga. Last month's Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) winner over the track, Folklore, looks to join 2004 Spinaway winner Society Selection and 2003 star Ashado, both of whom used this race as a springboard to grade I Spa glory
A homebred for the formidable ownership tandem of Bob and Beverly Lewis, Folklore
looked like a more mature filly when she courageously split foes while four-wide coming off the turn to get the Adirondack by three-quarters-of-a-length over Spinaway rival Fifth Avenue
D. Wayne Lukas trains the Tiznow
filly, who is said to possess her sire's keen mind. She is the first foal out of the unraced Storm Cat
mare Contrive, who was purchased by the Lewises for $825,000 at the 1999 Keeneland July yearling sale from the consignment of Three Chimney's Farm, agent.
Folklore has never finished worse than second in her four starts and has shown both early speed and the ability to relax. She retains the services of regular rider Cornelio Velasquez for a trip from the rail.
A bullet work (4f, :48.15) on the main track Aug. 14 is one of a string of sharp works showing this one is ready for the task.
Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith's Adieu
is set to contest from the outside seventh post. Bred in Kentucky by Glencrest Farm, the daughter of El Corredor
bested Folklore in the July 3 Astoria Stakes at Belmont and is two-for-three this season with a maiden-breaking effort at Keeneland.
A $140,000 Saratoga yearling, and a $300,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-old sale graduate, Adieu is out of the At the Threshold mare Irene's Talkin, and races under the tutelage of trainer Todd Pletcher -- well-known for his prowess with young horses.
The bay Adieu hasn't been working that quickly at the Spa, but Pletcher may just be keeping her fit. She's been out on or near the lead in both wins.
Pletcher first-call jock John Velazquez gets the call.
Hall of Famer Jerry Bailey gets the ride aboard Gainesway Thoroughbreds and George Bolton's undefeated Debutante Stakes (gr. III) winner Effectual
, who survived a rough start to virtually wire the field in the July 9 contest over 5 1/2 furlongs at Churchill.
Bred in Kentucky by Kim Nardelli, Rodney Nardelli, and Casner Racing Stable, Effectual was a $180,000 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling of last year, has plenty of early speed, and seems well-placed to compete with this group.
Out of the Skywalker mare Hooklineandsinker, Effectual got to know Bailey in her maiden-breaking effort at Keeneland this spring, though she was switched to the hands of Robby Albarado for the Debutante.
Effectual posted a string of solid works on the Saratoga main track for trainer Steve Asmussen and should be one to reckon with here.
She and Bailey will leave from post three.
Also adding intrigue to the affair is G R and S Stable's Fifth Avenue, winner of the June 9 Fashion Stakes at Belmont for trainer Mark Hennig before her solid second in the Adirondack.
Bred in Florida by Hobeau Farms, the daughter of Monarchos
, out of the Dehere mare Shop Here, is 2-1-0 on her three starts and has worked extremely well at the Union Street oval.
Pablo Fragoso will guide her out of post two.
All the entrants will shoulder 119 pounds. Along the Sea
, Wonder Lady Anne L
, and Sensation
make up the rest of the field.Spinaway Stakes (gr. II), Friday, Aug. 26, 2-year-old, fillies, seven furlongs, $250,000, post time 4:45 EDT.
