High Fly's Dam, Verbasle, Dead

Charlotte Weber's Verbasle, dam of 2005 grade I winner High Fly, was euthanized Aug. 16 at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute because of complications from laminitis. The 17-year-old daughter of Slewpy was not in foal at the time her death.

Weber bought Verbasle in the name of her Live Oak Stud at the time the mare was carrying High Fly. Consigned by Three Chimneys Sales, agent, Verbasle sold for $200,000 at the 2001 Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

High Fly, by Atticus, won this year's Florida Derby (gr. I), Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), and Aventura Stakes, all at Gulfstream Park in the Live Oak silks. He has earned $897,300.

Produced from the Verbatim mare Verbality, Verbasle raced as a homebred for Charles T. Wilson Jr., winning or placing in 16 of 26 starts and earning $250,801. Her four stakes-placings included a runner-up effort to champion Meadow Star in the 1990 Matron Stakes (gr. I).

Verbasle produced nine named foals, six of which were winners, including the stakes-winning full siblings Estimraar (a graded winner in Dubai by Holy Bull) and Smokey Mirage. Verbalse also foaled a Seeking the Gold colt this year.

Verbasle will be cremated and returned to Live Oak near Ocala, Fla., for burial.
