No Giveaway Pays Bundle in Longacres Mile
Herman Sarkowsky's homebred No Giveaway, under an excellently-timed ride from Juan Gutierrez, reached the wire just in time to register a 60-1 upset in the $250,000 Longacres Mile (gr. III) at Emerald Downs Sunday. The $122 payoff for a $2 win ticket set a record for the highest price in the 70 runnings of the Northwest's most lucrative race.Trained by Grant Forster, No Giveaway -- a 4-year-old Washington-bred gelding by He's Tops -- came from some 15 lengths behind on the backstretch to get up in the final jumps over a weary Quiet Cash, who is also trained by Forster. No Giveaway, coming of a victory in the local Governor's Handicap, picked up his sixth win in 10 tries at Emerald Downs, where he has made every start of his career. The winning time under picture perfect skies was 1:35 3/5.No Giveaway was ahead of only one on the backstretch as Flamethrowintexan and Sabertooth vied on a lively pace of :22 /5 and :44 4/5. The stalking Quiet Cash, ridden by Chad Hoverson, split the leaders to get the lead in the stretch but was tiring visibly. No Giveaway, who ranged into contention while saving ground all the way, came off the rail to wear down the leader. The $150,000 winner's share improved No Giveaway's career earnings to $223,906. He paid $42.40 to place and $14.20 to show. Quiet Cash returned $19.40 and $8.80, completing a $1,316 exacta. Desert Boom, ridden by Roberto Gonzalez, was edged for the second spot and paid $5.20 to show.Adreamisborn, the 5-2 favorite attempting to repeat his 2004 victory in the race, was never a factor under Russell Baze.
