Kinane Breaks Wrist, to Miss Irish Champion
Irish Jockey Mick Kinane has a broken right wrist, it was confirmed Sunday, and will miss four to six weeks. He'll be unable to ride Azamour in the Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I) on Sept. 10 at Leopardstown as a result of the injury.Kinane was injured when his mount, Redstone Dancer, fell during a race at The Curragh on Saturday.Christophe Soumillon will reportedly replace Kinane on Azamour, who teamed to capture the King George (Eng-I) for trainer John Oxx and owner the Aga Khan.Fran Berry, leading the Irish jockeys' race, fractured a bone in his chest in the same accident and remains hospitalized in Dublin. His horse, Indian Rite, broke down in front of Kinane's horse. A third horse fell in the ensuing collision. "I fractured my right wrist so I won't be able to sign any checks for a while," Kinane told Racing Post.Oxx employs both Kinane and Berry. His third jockey, Cathy Gannon, is also mending after a fall. "I thought I had plenty of jockeys," Oxx told Racing Post. "Christophe is retained by the Aga Khan, so he will come over for any big race when the Aga does not need him in France. He will ride Azamour in the Irish Champion, and I suppose he might come over to ride him work before that."
