Lava Man, the 9-5 morning line favorite to be ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, drew post position 4, while Swaps Stakes (gr. II) winner Surf Cat (3-1), with Alex Solis scheduled to ride, was assigned the  5 post for the 1 1/4-mile race, signature event of the Del Mar racing season.

Perfect Drift, the 4-1 third choice ridden by Mark Guidry, drew the exteme outside post position.
