Texas Sire Naevus Dies at Age 25

Naevus, the sire of 29 stakes winners and earners of more than $21 million, was euthanized Aug. 12 due to complications from laminitis.

The 25-year-old stallion had stood in Texas the past 10 years, most recently at Sue Dowling's Stoneview Farm near Hempstead. Naevus was owned by Dowling's father, Al Gerrans, in the name of his APG Holdings.

As a 3-year-old, the chestnut son of Mr. Prospector placed in four graded events at Santa Anita. As a sire, his top earner was millionaire King Glorious, winner of the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) and Haskell Invitational (gr. I), who is now standing at stud in Japan. In Texas, Naevus sired 2001 Texas champion 2-year-old gelding Nuclear Assembly.

Because of his age, Naevus had covered a limited book of mares the past few years. His lifetime progeny earnings exceed $21 million with 370 winners, 29 stakes winners, and five graded stakes winners.
