Sorenson Injured at Del Mar; Pesci Horse Wins

Jockey Danny Sorenson suffered a fractured left collarbone as the result of a mishap in Monday's first race at Del Mar. Sorenson's mount, longshot Perfect Judgment, stumbled badly while racing in the clear along the rail in midstretch and fell, unseating Sorenson.

The 47-year-old rider was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla where x-rays disclosed his injury. Cat scans of the neck and spine area were negative. Perfect Judgment reportedly was uninjured.

Meanwhile, Slide Home, a 3-year-old speedster owned by actor Joe Pesci and partner Ray Sainz, led from wire-to-wire to win the featured race, a six-furlong sprint for California-bred horses.

With jockey Mike Smith in the irons, Slide Home won by three quarters of a length in 1:09.28 for the distance, paying $14.60 to his backers. Maximum Heat, a 14-1 longshot, nosed out another outsider, Martinblestme, for second. Excess Temptations, part of the 1-5 favored entry with Excess Taxes, could salvage only fourth place in the field of seven horses. With heavy wagering to show on the entry which did not finish in the first three, show prices were generous. The winner paid $19.60 to show, runner-up Maximum Heat returned $25.80 to show and third-place Martinblestme paid $32 in the third betting spot. Slide Home, a son of Western Fame trained by Wesley Ward, was scoring his second victory in six lifetime efforts.
