Hawthorne Race Course in Chicago announced an across-the-board purse increase for its meeting that will run Sept. 23 through Dec. 31.
A release from the track credits past strong meetings and additional money provided by the Illinois Racing Board during the simulcast period since February.
Lower level claimers and maiden claimers will see a per-race increase of $500; mid-range claimers $1,000 (open $10,000 to open $18,000); upper level claimers ($20,000 and above) $1,500; and maiden special weight and allowance races $2,000.
"The Hawthorne fall meet has always been extremely well supported by our horsemen and looking at the amount of stalls that have been applied for this year, I expect that we'll have very competitive and good size field once again this year," Hawthorne Racing Secretary Gary Duch said in the release. "The Illinois Racing Board took notice of how well we have done in recent years and rewarded us with this extra money to improve big days such as our Gold Cup day, which will have more than $1 million in purses offered on that card, along with our Illinois Festival of Racing and fall turf racing through Thanksgiving will make Hawthorne an attractive place to race."
