Foster L. "Pete" Maloy, who raised 2005 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Buzzards Bay at his Hidden Hill Farm near Ocala, Fla., was shot and killed Aug. 12 by an enraged motorist at a road construction site under Maloy's supervision.
Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Ocala, with burial at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home 5740 South Pine Avenue in Ocala.
According to the Ocala
Star-Banner, the shooting occurred in Lake County near Umatilla, where Art Walker Construction Co. employees had been working for several months to widen and re-pave County Road 439. Maloy, 71 and past president of the Marion County Road Builders Association, was the project supervisor.
Gary Kenneth Monroe has been charged with the murder of Maloy and attempted murder in the critical wounding of Jeremy Evans, another worker at the site. Evans, 32, is the son of John Evans, former farm trainer for Arthur Appleton's Bridlewood Farm and currently general manager of Stoneway Farm in LaGrange, Ky.
Workers reported that Monroe harassed them previously, then returned Aug. 12, and got out of his car after parking it in the construction zone. When forced back into his car and told to leave, Monroe allegedly pulled out a .357-caliber Magnum handgun and began shooting. He fled and was later arrested.
Maloy stood Marco Bay, the sire of Buzzards Bay, at Hidden Hill Farm for a partnership that included Jay Shaw, the breeder of the Santa Anita Derby winner and one of Maloy's closest friends in the industry. He told the
Star-Banner that he and Maloy spoke nearly every day. "We mainly talked about horses. Aside from that, we talked about everything: life, him retiring. I'm in shock right now."
Maloy is survived by Mary Carolyn Maloy, his wife of 59 years; a daughter; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oak-Griner Baptist Church Building Fund, 6422 Northeast Jacksonville Road, Ocala FL 34479. Maloy was a deacon at the Ocala church.
