Florida-Bred Filly Nasheej Wins Sweet Solera
The Florida-bred Nasheej earned her first group win Saturday when she captured the Swynford Paddocks Hotel Sweet Solera Stakes (Eng-III) for 2-year-old fillies at Newmarket by a head over Confidential Lady.Doug Henderson bred the bay daughter of Swain-El Nafis (by Kingmambo) who turned the tables on the runner-up. Confidential Lady defeated her by two lengths in the listed BT Challenge Star Stakes at Sandown July 21. The rapidly developing Nasheej broke her maiden at first asking at Newbury June 30.Nasheej, who sold at Keeneland for $44,000 in January 2004, registered her second win in three starts for owner Malih L. Al Basti and trainer Richard Hannon. Early leader Deveron was joined by Confidential Lady on the lead near the midway point of the seven-furlong race. Confidential Lady, ridden by Seb Sanders at the center of the course was in a full drive for the wire but Pat Dobbs, aboard Nasheej, switched out nearing the final furlong to challenge the leaders. Ridden hard for the last 150 yards, she dug in to take the lead in the final strides.Deveron wound up third, a length behind the runner-up, with Rising Cross fourth. Spinning Queen, the 9-4 choice in the field of eight, finished fifth.Nasheej got a three-pound break in the weights from Confidential Lady. "She really takes her racing well and nothing seems to bother her," Hannon told Racing Post. "We thought we might turn it around with the penalty for the other filly." Hannon said he would aim for a mile stakes at the end of the month for Nasheej.The final time was 1:24.62 on good to firm going.
