Oklahoma Owner Robert S. Mitchell Dead
Robert S. Mitchell, a successful Oklahoma owner, died July 30 in Tulsa, Okla., after battling Parkinson's disease for several years. An Army veteran of World War II, he was 83.Mitchell's horses won stakes throughout the Midwest at tracks such as Churchill, Oaklawn, Remington, Arlington, Prairie Meadows, and Louisiana Downs. He raced about 15 stakes winners in his name and in his trust, including graded winners Testify and Well Noted. The former won the 2002 Aegon Turf Sprint Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs in one his three stakes wins, and Well Noted took the 2000 Razorback Handicap (gr. III) at Oaklawn.Mitchell experienced the thrill of starting a horse in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). His Our Trade Winds ran in the 1972 running, but finished unplaced to winner Riva Ridge.Mitchell's other stakes winners include Juggle the Books, My Son Bill, and Prospector's Song, who won five stakes, four of which were at Oaklawn. Mitchell also bred stakes winner Mambo Dove.Survivors include his wife, Iva, and four children.
