Canadian champion Magic Code and grade II turf winner Lady at Peace have been retired from racing and are booked to major Central Kentucky stallions. Magic Code will be bred to Fusaichi Pegasus, who stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., and Lady At Peace will go to Saint Ballado, who holds court at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky. Magic Code currently resides at Stone Farm near Paris, Ky., and Lady At Peace is at Middlebrook Farm near Lexington.
Six-year-old Magic Code was purchased privately last month by Japanese horseman Teruya Yoshida from a partnership that included trainer David Forster and his wife, Terri. Bred by Oscar Penn and Vinery, Magic Code (Lost Code -- Beautiful Pet, by Flying Paster) earned a Sovereign Award as best older female of 1999. She twice won the Ballerina Breeders' Cup Handicap when it was a grade III event and once when it wasn't graded. She was retired with nine wins from 32 starts and earnings of $568,243. It hasn't been determined if Magic Code will be sent to Japan or remain in the U.S.
Five-year-old Lady At Peace captured the Dahlia (gr. IIT) and San Gorgonio (gr. IIT) Handicaps, plus the Variety Queen Stakes. In her final race, she was beaten 1 3/4 lengths while finishing fifth in the Feb. 19 Buena Vista Handicap (gr. IIT) at Santa Anita for owners Jon and Sarah Kelly. Bred by Geri and Caroline Stautberg in partnership with John Stuart and Peter Bance, Lady At Peace (Lord At War -- Kshesinskaya, by Nijinsky II) won five of 19 races and earned $350,590.
