Streak Reaches Nine for Divine Proportions

The undefeated filly Divine Proportions ran her winning streak to nine Sunday with a comfortable two-length win in the Prix d'Astarte (Fr-I) on the one-mile straight at Deauville.

The Niarchos Family standout, who completed the French Oaks/One Thousand Guineas (both Fr-I) classic double, is destined for the NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) in New York Oct. 29 if all goes well. She collected her fifth group I victory while getting in a strong prep run in anticipation of the Prix Jacques le Marois (Fr-I) against colts at Deauville Aug. 14.

Divine Proportions lacked racing room after making a move on the field with a quarter-mile to run under jockey Christophe Lemaire, who waited patiently before reaching the front with a furlong to go. She pulled away in effortless style to register by two lengths over the German filly Shapira.

"I was worried a bit as things didn't go according to plan," racing manager Alan Cooper told Racing Post. "Christophe was very patient as he waited for an opening. Divine Proportions showed her true class again today, and she now goes for the Jacques Le Marois in a fortnight's time.

"Her last race, the Diane, was over ten and a half furlongs, and this will have certainly sharpened her up again. She was slowly out of the gate and that wasn't ideal, as we'd hoped to settle her behind the leader."

"If all goes well in that race, she won't be seen out again until the Breeders' Cup Mile," Cooper added. "In fact, we are following the same program as we did for Six Perfections.

"The Marois will be her first real test as she will come up against some tough older colts for the first time. It's still difficult to compare her completely with Miesque who was beaten at 2, but she did end up by winning 10 group I events."

Pascal Bary, who saddled the odds-on favorite, added, "I was a little worried, but she needed the race and will be much better in two weeks time. Things didn't quite work out as we'd hoped."

Shapira held second place by a neck over Gorella.
