Canadian Stallion Half a Year Dead

Half a Year, who was an English champion miler, was euthanized this summer due to complications from colic. The 21-year-old son of Riverman stood as the property of Danny Dion at Paddockhurst Stables near Nisku, Alberta, Canada.Half a Year earned his championship for his breeders, John and Betty Mabee, owners of Golden Eagle Farm near Ramona, Calif. A Kentucky-bred, Half a Year was England's champion 3-year-old miler in 1987 after winning the St. James's Palace Stakes (Eng-II) at Royal Ascot. He later was returned to North America and placed in the 1989 Rolling Green Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Golden Gate Fields.Half a Year retired with three wins from eight starts and earnings of $141,220 and entered stud at Golden Eagle. He sired a dozen stakes winners, including millionaire Full Moon Madness and grade II winner Yearly Tour. The popular Full Moon Madness won or placed in 27 California stakes.Half a Year, who was produced from the Northern Dancer mare Six Months Long, stood the past two years at Paddockhurst. He was buried at the farm.
