Alleged Ruler, a 4-year-old son of A.P. Indy
, takes on five rivals, including champions One for Rose and Wake at Noon, in Saturday's $161,100 Seagram Cup (Can-III) at Woodbine.
A lifetime winner of three races from 10 starts, Alleged Ruler, trained by Eric Coatrieux and owned by Chiefswood Stable, heads into the 1 1/16-mile Seagram Cup off a third-place finish to Sky Diamond in a 1 1/8-mile allowance race on June 10.
The dark bay, who sports mark of 1-0-1 from four starts in 2005, will be put to the test against some of Woodbine's most seasoned stars. Two-time Sovereign Award winner One For Rose, Canada's top older mare in 2003 and 2004, as well as Wake At Noon, the country's top sprinter, older horse and Horse of the Year in 2002, lead the contenders.
The champions are also Seagram winners, with Wake At Noon taking the 2003 edition and One for Rose visiting the winner's circle in 2004.
"He's improved, I like this horse, I like him a lot," said jockey Robert Landry, of the Ontario-bred Alleged Ruler, who finished seventh to stablemate Niigon in the 2004 Queen's Plate. "I think he'll come up with another strong effort."
Landry expects the lifetime earner of $197,673 to sit just off the pacesetters.
"I'd like to see him sit just off the pace, that would be the perfect scenario," said the veteran rider. "You can pretty much do what you want with him. This horse can be on the lead or off the pace."
After an up-and-down first year at the races, including a tenth-place finish in the Grade 3 Toronto Cup Stakes on the turf, along with two wins, a second, and a third in a four-race stretch, Alleged Ruler has shown a more mature approach in his sophomore campaign.
Saturday's race attracted U.S. invader Cuba, who finished second to Honolua Storm, also at Woodbine, in the Eclipse Stakes (Can-III) on May 23 at Woodbine.$161,100 SEAGRAM CUP (Can-III), 3 & up, 1 1/16 miles
