Jockey Stormy Smith had surgery Tuesday to repair a fractured eye socket and cheekbone, the result of being thrown by an unruly horse Saturday at Prairie Meadows.
Smith is in intensive care at Mercy Medical Center and will remain there for a couple more days, said his father-in-law, trainer Brent Clay. He said Smith's vision shouldn't be affected.
"They anticipate everything going smoothly," Clay said. "They put some plates in to reconstruct it and wired his jaw shut. He'll probably have that in for three or four weeks, and probably be off for eight weeks. It was a bad deal."
Smith was riding Rock N Roll Bud, who started bucking wildly a few strides after the start of the 350-yard Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association Sale Futurity. The gelding bucked so hard that he threw Smith into the air and when Smith was coming down in front of him, Rock N Roll knocked him aside with his head. The horse appeared to step on or kick Smith, who rides both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, after the jockey hit the ground.
"We had worked him five times at Canterbury Park, and he had never bucked like that," Clay said. "Stormy told me the horse warmed up great on the track, and he wasn't anticipating anything.
"He left the gate and, when the inside horse got away from him a little bit and threw dirt on him, he dropped his head and went bucking."
Smith was off to one of his best starts at Prairie Meadows, winning nine races in the first 10 days of the mixed meet.
He was the second jockey to be injured in three days. Tim Doocy was hospitalized with a separated pelvis after a horse reared up and fell on him prior to Thursday's first race.
