Court Masterpiece Victorious in Lennox Stakes

Maktoum al Maktoum's Court Masterpiece finally got over the group hump and posted his first win in such company when he edged Jack Sullivan in Tuesday's Lennox Stakes (Eng-II) at England's Goodwood Racecourse.

Ridden by Philip Robinson for trainer Ed Dunlop, the 5-year-old son of Polish Precedent crossed over the course to the grandstand side to mount his winning drive in the stretch, Jack Sullivan, a U.S.-bred son of Belong to Me  , led with two furlongs remaining before relinquishing it 100 yards out. He rallied gamely only to finish second by a short head. Final time for the seven furlongs in the race run as the Betfair Stakes was 1:26.23 over good to soft turf. Autumn Glory, the 11-4 favorite in the 14-horse field, finished 13th.

Twice a listed stakes winner, Court Masterpiece had finished second in two group III events this year and was group II-placed in 2004. He has five victories, five seconds, three thirds from 21 outings.

"I'm thrilled for the horse, he's been placed in so many group races and finally managed to win one," Robinson said.

The Racing Post reported that trainer Gerard Butler is continuing to point runner-up Jack Sullivan to the the Breeders' Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge (gr. I). The 4-year-old colt will be sent to the U.S. for three races following an appearance at York next month.

Butler said the domestic campaign for Jack Sullivan will begin with the Woodward Stakes Sept. 10.

Also at Goodwood Tuesday, Evaluator won the Summer Stakes under Kieren Fallon and the ABN Amro Stakes (Eng-III) went to The Geezer.
