Mambo Slew, a two-time graded stakes winner on grass, has been retired from racing with a record of four wins from 15 starts and earnings of $282,180 for owner Frank Manganaro.
Bred in Kentucky by Manganaro and his son's F.J.F.M., Mambo Slew battled top turf filly Ticker Tape in several stakes. In back-to-back starts, Mambo Slew beat Ticker Tape in both the Miesque Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Hollywood Park as a 2-year-old in 2003 and in the Blue Norther Stakes on grass at Santa Anita in her 3-year-old debut in her next race.
Mambo Slew also was a graded stakes winner as a 3-year-old. She captured the Sands Point Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park over Lucifer's Stone and ran second in the Lake Placid Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga and the China Doll Stakes on grass at Santa Anita.
Four-year-old Mambo Slew, by Kingmambo, is a half-sister to stakes winners Born Twice and Awesome Time. Her dam, Slew Boyera (by Seattle Slew), produced a Fusaichi Pegasus filly this year.
Mambo Slew will be boarded at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., and the decision as to a mating will be announced later.
