The race for leading sire of 2001 has begun, and the leader so far is Gilded Time. The 11-year-old stallion is represented by the earners of $614,886 through Feb. 17, and his runners include graded stakes winners Early Flyer and Lasersport. The two 3-year-olds battled it out in the San Vicente Stakes (gr. II) and San Miguel Stakes (gr. III), with Early Flyer defeating Lasersport in the San Vicente and Lasersport taking the better of Early Flyer in the San Miguel. Gilded Time (Timeless Moment -- Gilded Lily, by What a Pleasure) stands at Tom Simon's Vinery Kentucky near Lexington.

Four other stallions--Carson City, Allen's Prospect, Mt. Livermore, and Dynaformer -- have topped the $500,000 mark in 2001 progeny earnings. Carson City's runners have earned $550,228 and include stakes winner Sam Lord's Castle and grade I stakes-placed City Zip, both of whom are 3-year-olds. Sam's Lord Castle captured the LeComte Stakes at Fair Grounds. City Zip, a grade I winner last year, ran second in the Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. I). Fourteen-year-old Carson City (Mr. Prospector -- Blushing Promise, by Blushing Groom) stands at William T. Young's Overbrook Farm near Lexington.

Allen's Prospect's runners have earned $533,286 and include Just Allen, who won the Count Fleet Stakes for 3-year-olds. Nineteen-year-old Allen's Prospect (Mr. Prospector -- Change Water, by Swaps) stands at the Pons family's Country Life Farm near Bel Air, Md.

Right behind Allen's Prospect in progeny earnings is 20-year-old Mt. Livermore, whose runners have earned $528,728. Mt. Livermore is represented by graded stakes winners Hoovergetthekeys and Hidden Assets. Three-year-old Hoovergetthekeys won the Golden Gate Derby (gr. III), and 4-year-old Hidden Assets captured the Shirley Jones Handicap (gr. III) to remain unbeaten in two starts this year. Mt. Livermore (Blushing Groom -- Flama Ardiente, by Crimson Satan) stands at Graham J. Beck's Gainesway Farm near Lexington.

Dynaformer just made the half-million-dollar club. His runners have earned $502,422. Sixteen-year-old Dynaformer (Roberto -- Andover Way, by His Majesty) stands at Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky.
