Proud Man Takes Palm Beach Over One Eyed Joker

Proud Man rallied between horses to edge One Eyed Joker by a length Monday in the $134,500, grade III Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Proud Man, ridden by Rene Douglas, ran 1 1/8 miles on the turf course in 1:48 1/5 and paid $7.80, $3.60 and $2.80. One Eyed Joker returned $5.80 and $3.40, and Strategic Partner paid $4.20 to show.

Proud Man has four victories in 10 career starts. He earned $90,000 to push his career total to $212,125. Trained by Harry Benson, the 3-year-old son of Manlove (by Mr. Prospector) was bought at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June sale of 2-year-olds in training $10,000.

Winner of the Tropical Park Derby (gr. III) on New Year's Day, Proud Man was previously trained by Julian Canet. Since being tried on grass, Proud Man has four victories and a second in five starts.
