Pompeii Rebounds For Rare Treat Victory

Pompeii, ridden by Javier Castellano, captures The Rare Treat Handicap at Aqueduct on Monday's holiday card.
Pompeii rebounded from her defeat in the Affectionately Handicap on January 13 for a handy 3 3/4 -length victory in the $110,300 Rare Treat Handicap for fillies and mares Monday at Aqueduct.
Biogio's Rose was runner-up in the eight-horse field, with Back in Shape another 3 lengths back. Favored Pentatonic rallied late to be fourth. The win was the sixth in twelve career starts for Pompeii, who also has four seconds and a third.
Pompeii, a 4-year-old Broad Brush filly ridden by Javier Castellano for trainer John Kimmel, covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 3/5 under 115 pounds on a fast track. She earned $66,180 for owner Robert N. Clay and returned $7.20, $5.70 and $3.90. Biogio's Rose, making her last career start before being bred to Lemon Drop Kid, paid $10.80 and $6.50, and Back in Shape returned $8.10.
