11 -- Monarchos
/John Ward/Maria's Mon-Regal Band, by Dixieland Band
Worked 5 furlongs in 1:00 1/5 Monday. Ward likes to build up stamina, and had him gallop out in 1:12, pulling up 7 furlongs in 1:26, a mile in 1:40 and 1 1/8 miles in 1:55. Untapped ability and a bright future.
12 -- You Know Who
/Todd Pletcher/Southern Halo-Lubianka, by Criminal Type
With stakes horses failing to sort themselves out, going with another allowance horse. Turned in a monster stretch run to beat some pretty good horses and drew off quickly. Distance should be no problem.
13-- City Zip
/Linda Rice/Carson City-Baby Zip, by Relaunch
Ran his usual honest race in Fountain of Youth, and made a long, sustained run from the three-eighths pole to the wire. Question is whether he can make the jump to 1 1/8 miles and still pack a punch. Had second in deep stretch and lost it to Outofthebox.
/Bob Baffert/Concern-Celestial Jazz, by Dancing Count
Definitely deserves another chance. Hadn't run in while and made a good strong run at Songandaprayer from the three-eighths pole to quarter pole before tiring. Likely will run in San Rafael or El Camino Real Derby.
15 -- Gold Trader
/D. Wayne Lukas/Storm Cat-Golden Attraction, by Mr. Prospector
Lukas is usually a lot stronger at this point, but his horses are not as advanced as in previous years. This is still his brightest hope, and the likely spots for him are the San Rafael or El Camino Real Derby.
16 -- Express Tour
/Saeed bin Suroor/Tour d'Or-Express Fashion, by Private Express
Outofthebox's development into a top Derby contender makes Express Tour look even better, as he defeated the Fountain of Youth runner-up at Calder last year. Coming along a bit slower than Street Cry, but improving every day, and may also debut in UAE Guineas.
17 -- Holiday Thunder
/John Ward/Thunder Gulch-Magical Holiday, by Slew o' Gold
Bled a little in the Fountain of Youth, but has bounced back out of the race and will point for the Spiral Stakes. Very honest colt, and you have to throw this race out. Also broke from 10-post and rushed up to get position, which didn't help either.
18 -- Ommadon
/Tom Walsh/Grindstone-Missymooiloveyou, by Turkoman
Will point for a two-turn allowance race at Aqueduct, rather than debut in the Gotham. The breeding is there and the 2-year-old form is there. This is a talented colt who has shown it since day one. Has good speed and can carry it.
/Bill Mott/Broad Brush-Salty Gal, by Cox's Ridge
Mott was disappointed in his 3-year-old debut and will make adjustments to his running style. Showed more speed than usual after breaking poorly and going 5-wide into the first turn. Must show some zip after running some flat races.
/Elliott Walden/Out of Place-Always Be Mine, by Kris S
Compromised by 11-post and breaking sharply to the outside, the having to go 5-wide into the first turn. Never seemed to get into the race after that. He's already shown he's a good horse, and he deserves another chance to return to his 2-year-old form.
KNOCKING ON THE DOOR: STRIKE IT SMART won his second straight at Fair Grounds and looks to have potential. Runner-up STABLE SECRET raced greenly, but was making up ground late. Good distance pedigree. Risen Star runner-up GRACIE'S DANCER almost pulled it off in his first start over 6 furlongs. Fast colt, but has good distance pedigree in female family. SCORPION nearing debut, blazed 5 furlongs in :58 4/5. Baffert looking at nonwinners allowance this week for SILVERTONGUE FOX. Baffert still thinking Derby with DENIED after successful throat operation. Bill Mott-trained THIS FLEET IS DUE is a beautiful, well-balanced colt; looking for two-turn allowance race. Arazi's brother NOVERRE will tackle Street Cry and Express Tour in UAE Guineas. BURNING ROMA breezed sharp 5 furlongs in 1:00 4/5, but if owner says no Derby, who are we to doubt him.
