Edited Churchill Downs report
Jockey Robby Albarado records first five-win day at Churchill since 2001.
Effectual, with Robby Albarado aboard, took control soon after the opening eighth of a mile and then drew off down the stretch to hold off the late closing Joint Effort in Saturday's $112,600 Debutante (gr. III) for 2-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.
The win was the fifth of the afternoon for Albarado, who also collected his sixth Downs stakes win of the meet.
Undefeated in two career starts, Effectual sped the 5 1/2-furlongs in 1:03.95 and paid $8.60, $4.20, and $3. Joint Effort, the 2-1 favorite in the field of nine ridden by Mark Guidry, returned $4.00 and $2.80. Swept Gold closed from sixth under Brian Hernandez, Jr. to finish another two lengths back in third and paid $2.80.
The 2-year-old daughter of Carson City, owned by Antony Beck's Gainesway Thoroughbred Ltd and George Bolton, was coming off a win in her debut at Keeneland on April 15 and earned $69,812 to increase her career earnings to $101,084. The filly was purchased for $180,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. Effectual provided trainer Steve Asmussen his third stakes win of the Churchill meet.
Effectual bobbled at the start, but quickly recovered to seize the lead from Dance Daily and accelerated to a three length advantage at the top of the stretch. Joint Effort, fifth in the early going, encountered some bumping entering the far turn and swung wide in the stretch to rally for the runner-up spot. Swept Gold also encountered close quarters while sixth on the turn, then rallied four-wide to get up for third.
"She broke a little tardy, but it didn't take her long to catch up," said Albarado. "If she'd have broke in order, there's no telling how easy she might have won. She's a great filly."
Alabarado's five-win day was the first at Churchill since Pat Day accomplished the feat on June 6, 2001. Outside of Day, the last jockey to score a five-win day at the track was Calvin Borel on October 30, 1997. In the 131-year-history of Churchill Downs, there have been 44 times a rider has scored five wins on the card with the feat registered by 22 different riders.
A 31-year-old native of Lafayette, LA, Albarado scored his wins in the second, Scat Cat Jamey ($2.80); third, Reunited ($6.20); seventh, Rhythm in Shoes ($37.40); ninth, Unbridled Sidney ($6.00) and Effectual in the 10th.
Albarado's win aboard Unbridled Sidney came in track record performance in the $72,000 Zenobia Empress Overnight Handicap, one of two secondary features on Saturday's 11-race program.
The 4-year-old daughter of Unbridled's Song
scored a dominating victory over nine opponents in the five furlong turf race for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up. Owned by Douglas Devenport and trained by Ronny Werner, Unbridled Sidney led from the start and margin at every call to pay $6, $4.20, and $3.60 as the 2-1 favorite. Mocha Queen, with Craig Perret up, rallied for second and paid $6 and $4.20. Final Discount finished third under Jesus Castanon and paid $10.
Unbridled Sidney covered five furlongs on "firm" turf in :55.54 and erased the previous record for the distance of :55.57 set by Are You Down in May 2003.
Werner had earlier saddled Richard and Nancy Kaster's Flying Glitter to win the $72,000 Heavenly Cause Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
The daughter of Glitterman
led from the start under jockey Eddie Martin, Jr. and held off favored Culinary to win a half-length and paid $14.80, $6 and $4.20. Culinary, with Albarado up, returned $3 and $2.40 as the even-money favorite. She's That Cat, ridden by Jesus Castanon, finished third and paid $5.
Flying Glitter, who won her second consecutive race and has now scored all three of her career victories at Churchill Downs, covered a mile over a "fast" track in 1:35.51.
