Just minutes before London beat the French capital to land the 2012 Olympic Games, Back To Paris (Lil's Boy -- Alisco) topped Wednesday's second session of the Tattersalls July mixed sale in Newmarket in England.
A possible attempt at the Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) in August could await the 3-year-old Ireland-bred gelding, which had been trained by Jim Bolger, and was bought for 110,000 guineas by agent Sean Tiernan to return to Ireland to trainer Eoin Griffin principally as a hurdling prospect.
"He could go for the Del Mar Derby before going over hurdles and, obviously, we'd have the Triumph Hurdle (at Cheltenham in March of 2006) in mind," said Tiernan, who spent six years training in New York and Florida. "He's a horse with some good form and plenty of size to him."
The Curragh Bloodstock Agency's Eamonn Reilly was underbidder on Back To Paris.
A 3-year-old colt named Jonquil (by Machiavellian) was bought through Oliver St Lawrence of McKeever St Lawrence for 70,000 guineas by Bahrain-based owner-trainer Fawzi Nass. Jonquil could remain in Britain before heading into Bahrain, from where he is likely to be targeted at the Dubai Carnival.
Magic Instinct (by Entrepreneur) is set to head even further afield after Alastair Donald of the Kern Lillingston Association paid 65,000 guineas for the gelding. Donald was accompanied by his client, Simon O'Donnell of the Australian-based OTI Syndicate, and if all goes to plan their purchase could line up in the 2006 Melbourne Cup (Aust-I).
