Keep Cool went gate-to-wire to spring an upset in the $100,000 Mecke Handicap on the turf Monday at Calder Race Course.

Jockey Jose Rivera II rode the Florida-bred 5-year-old Frosty the Snowman gelding to a one-length victory for trainer Victor Falzone. Bob's Proud Moment finished second, 3 1/4 lengths in front of third-place Demeteor.

Keep Cool broke alertly from the starting gate despite the fact that the horse next to him, Cervelo, reared dramatically when the gates opened, dropping his jockey Paul Toscano (both horse and rider were unharmed in the incident). Keep Cool established the lead and never relinquished it in the 1 1/8-mile race on the turf, covering the distance in 1:49.87.

Keep Cool's sixth career win pushes his lifetime earnings to $219,940 for Skys the Limit Racing Inc. Sent off at odds of 9-to-1, he paid $21.40, 12.40, and 10.40. Bob's Proud Moment, a 33-1 shot, returned $37.40 and 15.60, while Demeteor paid $8.60 to show.

Final Prophecy, the 11-10 favorite in the field of 12, finished seventh. Twilight Road, the second choice at 7-2, was ninth.
