Jockey Jeremy Rose, the focus of national attention with his acrobatic ride in winning the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) aboard Afleet Alex, notched his 1,000th victory in the eighth race at Delaware Park July 3.
Rose, 26, who also won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) with Afleet Alex, the nation's top 3-year-old, road Margarita Maggie to victory for his milestone. Margarita Maggie closed with determination to defeat two rivals in the final strides, winning by a head.
Rose earned applause for his athletic ability when Afleet Alex overcame a hard bump from Scrappy T at the top of the Pimlico stretch to win the Preakness May 21. The colt nearly went to his knees in the collision, but Rose managed to stay aboard then calmly guided Afleet Alex to victory.
The Pennsylvania native was awarded an Eclipse as the nation's top apprentice jockey in 2001. He won his first race in 2000.
