Making his fourth career start, Ogden Phipps homebred Buckpasser finished in a dead-heat with Ethel Jacobs' Hospitality in the National Stallion Stakes (colts and geldings division) at Aqueduct on June 28, 1965. The even-money favorite in the six-horse field, Buckpasser went on to earn champion 2-year-old honors with nine wins in 11 starts that year.Ferdinand Wins Hollywood Gold Cup
Mrs. Howard Keck's Ferdinand, one of three horses in the field trained by Charlie Whittingham that went off as a 2-5 coupled entry, posted a 1 1/4-length triumph over stablemate Judge Angelucci and Tasso (in a dead-heat for second) in the Hollywood Gold Cup on June 28, 1987. The victory was the first of the season in the sixth start of the year for the son of Nijinsky II, who then went on a four-race win streak that ended with a victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Horse of the Year honors.
