Nicaron gave 72-year-old trainer Horst Steinmetz his first group I victory when the colt registered a 1 1/2-length win in the BMW Deutsches Derby (Ger-I) at Hamburg on Sunday.
With Frenchman David Bonilla in the irons, Nicaron overtook the leaders 150 yards from home and pulled away on soft going. Night Tango, ridden by Mick Kinane, rallied late to get second by six lengths over 6-5 favorite Arcadio.
Steinmetz, who has been training horses for 40 years, told Racing Post
afterward, "Obviously there have been thoughts of retirement but it will definitely not be this year as I have got such a good bunch of three-year-olds and some nice two-year-olds as well. I am still enjoying it, and while I am enjoying it I will carry on."
The German-bred Nicaron, a son of the deceased sire Acatenango, settled in fourth during most of the 1 1/2-mile journey, making his move on the outside of his rivals in the straight.
Steinmetz said Nicaron is likely to take on the older horses for the first time in the Rheinland-Pokal (Ger-I) at the German Derby's distance at Cologne on Aug. 14.
"I was warned that Nicaron could be difficult at the start but he behaved perfectly," Bonilla said. "I was always in a handy position, keeping off the inside where the ground was poached, and he quickened up in the straight in the style of a very good horse."
Heavy rain prior to the race compromised the chances of Arcadio, who disputed the lead until giving way with two furlongs left.
September Storm was slipping and fell with three furlongs to go. His jockey, Andrasch Starke, was taken to hospital but was not believed to be seriously hurt.
Konigstiger finished fourth, followed by Harar, Albarino, Silent Wind, All Spirit, Konigsbote, Alpacco, Orange Blue and September Storm. The time was 2:35.42
