The mutuel field remained the fans' favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, but an upset in the weekend's major Kentucky Derby prep race resulted in a shuffling of the odds on several Derby contenders heading into the final day of wagering in the pool.

The mutuel field, which includes all 3-year-olds other than the 23 individual horses listed among the wagering interests in the Future Wager, was a 9-5 favorite when the third day of wagering in the four-day pool drew to a close Saturday evening at 11:00 p.m. (EST). A total of $278,121 had been wagered at racetracks and satellite wagering outlets in 28 states during the first three days of Pool 1 - including $81,484 on the mutuel field. The three-day total is the largest in Pool 1 since the Kentucky Derby Future Wager's inception in 1999 and exceeded last year's previous high of $260,723. Total wagering for all four days of Pool 1 in 2000 was $465,454.

The biggest move of the day was made by Songandaprayer, the upset winner of the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. Owned by the Devil Eleven Stable of former pro basketball star Bobby Hurley and D J Stable, Songandaprayer opened Saturday's wagering as the longest shot in the field at 99-1, but the odds on that colt had dropped to 30-1 by the end of Saturday's betting.

The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Point Given remained a solid second choice in Pool 1 at odds of 8-1. The third choice in Pool 1 continued to be Celtic Pride Stable's A P Valentine, who was listed at 10-1 at the end of Saturday's wagering despite a disappointing third place finish in his 2001 debut in a Gulfstream Park allowance race. Next in line were Dollar Bill, Monarchos and Millennium Wind, who were listed at 18-1. Dollar Bill, the winner of the Brown & Williamson Kentucky Jockey Club (grade II) at Churchill Downs, is scheduled to make his 2001 debut Sunday in the Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows racing fans to place wagers on contenders for the Kentucky Derby weeks in advance at odds that may be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a $2 minimum wager and is a win bet only.

Wagering on Pool 1 of the Future Wager is scheduled to resume Sunday at noon (EST) at will close at 4:30 p.m. (EST). The odds that are in place when the pool closes will be its final odds and winning payouts will be based on those odds.

There will be two more pools in the 2001 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. Pool 2 is scheduled for March 8-11 and Pool 3 is set for April 5-8. The 127th running of the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 5 at Churchill Downs.
