Osidy, a Kentucky-bred son of Storm Cat
, seeks his second successive graded stakes victory in Hollywood Park's $150,000 Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) on Sunday when facing five other 3-year-olds in the 1 1/8-mile turf event.
Since being purchased by B. Wayne Hughes and turned over to trainer Richard Mandella, the French import finished a fast-closing second in Hollywood Park's Harry Henson Stakes at 5½ furlongs and captured the Will Rogers (gr. IIIT) at one mile on May 28.
Alex Solis, aboard in both those turf races, again has the riding assignment in the Cinema, a stake he won last year atop Greek Sun for trainer Bobby Frankel. Should the likely favorite be successful on Sunday, Osidy would become the seventh 3-year-old in Hollywood Park history to complete the Will Rogers-Cinema double. National champion Round Table was the first in 1959; Let Bob Do It, the last in 1996.
Osidy, who began his career in France last year with two victories while ridden by Gary Stevens, has earned $133,256 from a 3-1-1 record in seven starts. He rallied to defeat Willow O Wisp by a head in the Will Rogers.
Osidy will share Sunday's high weight assignment of 119 pounds with Willow O Wisp, who has blossomed on the West Coast for trainer Vladimir Cerin. The Florida-bred gelding was victorious in but one of six starts while beginning his career at Calder Race Course in Florida last year.
Sent by owner Robert Alexander to the stable of Cerin, Willow O Wisp won his first start at Hollywood Park, an allowance race at one mile on grass, at odds of 20-1 on April 23. He followed with his near miss in the Will Rogers with Garrett Gomez back in the saddle, this time at 18-1.
Unbeaten Legal Precedent, a Kentucky-bred son of Theatrical
trained by Ben Cecil for John Moore, enters stakes competition following wins in a maiden race and allowance at Hollywood Park, both at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Corey Nakatani will replace Solis, who rode Legal Precedent both times. $150,000-added Cinema Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT), 3-year-olds, 1 1/8 miles (turf)
