Longshot Prized Stamp Defeats Nany's Sweep in Barbara Fritchie

Prized Stamp, sent off at nearly 18-1, rallied from last in the six-horse field to win Saturday's $200,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (gr. II) at Laurel Park, ending the multiple stakes winning streaks of California-shipper Nany's Sweep and Maryland-bred Gin Talking in the process. Nany's Sweep shipped in after winning two stakes races in California, including the grade I Santa Monica Handicap. Gin Talking had won three straight stakes races prior to Saturday's seven-furlong event, capped by a win against males in the $75,000 Broad Brush on New Year's Eve.

After Tax Affair sprinted alone on the lead through opening fractions of :22.84 and :44.90, Prized Stamp uncorked her run and led by a half-length after six furlongs run in 1:11.07. The 4-year-old daughter of Prized eased away from second place finisher Superduper Miss in the final furlong, stopping the timer in 1:23.74 after seven furlongs run on a fast track.

Tax Affair came home third, followed by Nany's Sweep, Gin Talking, and Ivy's Jewel.

Prized Stamp earned $120,000 for the win, her seventh in 16 career races. The only prior stakes win for Prized Stamp came in the Lady Dean Stakes last July at Laurel. Prized Stamp is trained by Dale Capuano for owner William Sorokolit.

Prized Stamp returned $37.40, $12, and $7.20. Superduper Miss paid $6.60 and $6. Tax Affair was worth $7.20 to show. The winning exacta combination paid $257.80. (Chart, Equibase)
