After 25 Years, Farrell Jones Visits Hollywood

Retired trainer Farrell W. Jones, eighth in career victories at Hollywood Park with 479, visited the track for the first time in 25 years Sunday.

"I used to gallop Seabiscuit," said Jones, 82, as he watched horses exercise from a backstretch stand overlooking the track. "I was under contract to C.S. (Charles) Howard. I made $25 a month the first year, $35 a month the second year, and $55 a month the third year. Then I told him good-bye."

Jones, the father of Gary Jones and grandfather of Marty Jones, both successful trainers as well, went on to become one of the giants of the Southern California circuit. He was leading conditioner at Hollywood Park in 1965, 1967, 1970 and 1971 before a heart attack ended his career.

He owns a lay-up center in Hemet with 90 horses managed by Marcos Menjuvar, who accompanied him Sunday.

Jones is the breeder of Pt's Grey Eagle and Hemet Thought, horses that competed in allowance races here this month.
