Pleasant Chimes Rings True in Susan's Girl

Edward P. Evans' Pleasant Chimes rallied in the home stretch to post an upset victory in the $170,800 Susan's Girl Breeders' Cup at Delaware Park Saturday.

Ridden by Pablo Fragoso, the 3-year-old daughter of Pleasant Tap won by a length and returned $9.60, $3, and $2.10 as the second choice in the field of six. The 2-to-5 favorite, Dance Away Capote ($2.20, $2.10) with Ramon Dominguez aboard, finished second. It was another 1 ¼ lengths back to Capitulation ($2.10), Mario Pino aboard, in third.

Pleasant Chimes covered the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:47.66 over a fast main track. The Susan's Girl Breeders' Cup was the first career stake score for the Virginia-bred trained by Mark Hennig. Her career record is three wins and two thirds from six starts with earnings of $190,000.

"My filly can run all day," said Fragoso. "She is a nice little filly."

H. Graham Motion, the trainer of second-place finisher Dance Away Capote, thought her chances were compromised due to the slow early fractions of :51.22 for the half-mile and 1:15.97 for the three-quarters.

"It was an oddly run race in that they ran so slowly which kind of took her out of her game," he said.
