Legible, winner of the 2003 Sandown Classic (Aust-II), sold for Aus$610,000 Wednesday to top the first session of the Magic Millions national mare sale on Australia's Gold Coast. The 6-year-old daughter of Zabeel – Waihora's Lass was part of a reduction of fillies and mares for prominent Melbourne-based businessman Lloyd Williams. Coolmore Stud's Peter O'Brien was her buyer.
"She was purchased for an Australian-based client," O'Brien said. "Throughout her whole life she has been a lovely horse. I remember her being a lovely yearling, and now she's developed into a lovely mare after proving her ability on the track."
O'Brien said the sale price of Aus$610,000 was "a fair price" considering the strong selling at sales in recent times around the region.
Sir Patrick Hogan, who was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame last month, was the underbidder.
Another star offering from the Williams reduction was the group I- winning mare Inaflury. Like Legible, she attracted plenty of attention and she was snapped up by Gerry Harvey for Aus$425,000.
Late in the session the stakes winning mare Forum Floozie was bought back for $850,000. She failed to reach her reserve of $900,000.
In all during the first session, 195 horses were sold for a gross of Aus$13,984,850 and an average of Aus$71,717. Last year, 194 were sold for a gross of Aus$10,260,200 and an average of Aus$52,888. Eighty-eight percent of the horses offered were sold compared to 94% in 2004.
