Giant's Causeway Filly Sets Magic Millions Record
(Edited press release)A Giant's Causeway filly broke the record for the Magic Millions National yearling auction when she sold for Aus$400,000 Thursday in Australia during the sale's opening session on the Gold Coast. Sydney-based bloodstock agent James Bester purchased her from Raheen Stud, agent. Produced from the dual group I-winning mare Showella (by Lord Ballina), the filly is a half-sister to group winner Buster Jones and she is from the family of New Zealand Horse of the Year Show Gate."She's a quality filly," Bester said. "She was a very good mover, and she has an outstanding pedigree."Bester said he bought the filly on behalf of a client who would keep her in Australia. She is a member of the first Australian crop of Giant's Causeway.The Giant's Causeway filly was one of two yearlings whose prices surpassed the auction's previous mark. Earlier in the day, a Danehill – Passing Hope filly sold for $320,000 to Australian trainer Gai Waterhouse. Reavill Farm was her consignor.In all, 127 horses were sold during first session, and they grossed Aus$3,496,750 and averaged Aus$27,533. Last year, during same session, 193 were sold for a gross of Aus$3,222,500 and an average of Aus$16,697. This year, 76.1% of the horses offered were sold compared to 68% in 2004.The sale's second session is scheduled for Friday.
