A one-third interest in Ghostzapper, shown winning Monday's Met Mile, has been purchased by Jess Jackson.
Jess Jackson, who, along with his family, founded the famous Kendall-Jackson winery, said shortly after the May 30 Metropolitan Handicap that he has purchased one-third interest in 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, who romped by 6 1/4 lengths in the Met Mile in his 2005 debut.
Jackson, who owns the former Buckram Oak Farm near Lexington, where he has around 150 mares, said the deal involving the 2004 Horse of the Year has taken several months to finalize. Ghostzapper, by Awesome Again
, won the Met Mile by 6 1/4 lengths in his 2005 debut.
"Frank and I have developed a mutual friendship, and I had already invested in Awesome Again," Jackson said. "We actually met bidding against each other for several mares. It was Frank who approached me about buying into Ghostzapper and we finalized the deal Friday (May 27). And 20 minutes before the Met Mile, I won a race at Hollywood Park, so I'm just now coming down. I think Ghostzapper's potential as a sire is tremendous.
"We currently have 150 mares and will have 180 after we bring home the ones off the track. I've bought some privately and claimed some."
One of the mares Jackson bought privately was Maggy Hawk, dam of Preakness (gr. I) winner Afleet Alex. "I wanted her right after I saw Alex break his maiden by (11 1/4) lengths at Delaware Park," he said.
Ghostzapper, out of the Relaunch mare Baby Zip, won all four of his starts last year, culminating with the Breeders Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I). In all, the 5-year-old horse has won nine of 11 races and earned $3,446,120.To purchase photographs of Ghostzapper and other great thoroughbreds, click here.
