Alex's Lemonade Stand Collects $18,000 on Preakness Day

The largest Preakness Stakes (gr. I) crowd in history helped Alex's Lemonade Stand raise $18,000 in donations at its two locations at Pimlico Race Course last Saturday. The Pennsylvania-based charity collected almost $11,000 earlier this month at the Kentucky Derby (gr. I).

Eight-year-old Alexandra "Alex" Scott founded Alex's Lemonade Stand to benefit pediatric cancer research. She was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer before her first birthday.

Scott began working toward a cure through the lemonade stand when she was four, donating the proceeds to "her hospital." Before her death last August, she set a donation goal of $5 million for 2005.

The connections of the Preakness winner Afleet Alex donate a percentage of his winnings to the charity. This week, Huckleberry Farm, another client of trainer Tim Ritchey, donated $10,000.

"Fasig-Tipton had a stand at the Timonium sale Monday, and I know they raised a significant amount of money as well," said Ritchey. He hopes to have a lemonade stand at every racetrack that runs June 11, the day of the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

Pimlico has also committed to having a stand on Belmont day.
