Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) has approved grants of $1,227,000 spread out to 112 equine charities for the 2005 fiscal year. The grants will be going to retirement, rescue, and research organizations in 33 states.

This marks the fifth consecutive year TCA has given grants in excess of $1 million, and the 2005 figure is the most awarded by TCA in any fiscal year. TCA has issued more than $10 million in grants in the 15 years since it began running its annual auction.

"The $10 million in TCA grants was accomplished with the industry's support," said TCA president Herb Moelis. "Without the donations of stallion seasons to our auction, many of these ex-racehorse and backstretch organizations could not have survived. This is a perfect example of an industry helping their own, and we are most grateful to all the season owners, farm managers, artists, and other donors who give so generously to our auction and make these grants possible."

The majority of the funds awarded by TCA are generated at its auction and dinner, where stallion seasons, artwork, and memorabilia are auctioned off. This year's event will be held Dec. 3 at Candyland Farm in Middletown, Delaware, with a simultaneous auction held at Cross Gate Gallery in Lexington. TCA will also host a charity golf tournament and Las Vegas night Aug. 16 at the Saratoga Spa Course.

TCA focuses its support on horse rescue, retirement, medical research, and therapeutic riding programs, as well as scholarships and rehabilitation for people who work at racetracks and on horse farms.
