Gentry, Partners Buy Gaines' Interests

John R. Gaines announced Monday he has sold his bloodstock company, John R. Gaines Thoroughbreds, to Olin Gentry and partners. In March Gentry was named president and CEO of the company.

“There comes a time when the torch must be passed on to a new younger generation and I am not involved in the company in any capacity,” Gaines, 71, said in a statement. “However, I will continue my involvement in various industry organizations.” Gaines said he had recently rejoined the board of directors of Breeders' Cup Ltd. and the Kentucky Horse Park.

Gaines founded, then sold, Gainesway Farm near Lexington, where at one point he stood as many as 45 stallions for stud duty. In recent years John R. Gaines Thoroughbreds has put together a top-notch broodmare band which now totals 110 mares. Among that group, many of which are stakes winners themselves, are the dams of grade I winners Affirmed Success, Gilded Time, Jade Hunter, Marquetry, Old Trieste, Prized, and Sardula. Among Gaines' partners on more than a handful of those mares is Orpendale, a division of the Coolmore operation.

Gentry said all mares, foals, and stallion interests had changed hands and plans were to continue to sell foals from the mares as weanlings.
