Beltran's 'Agua Caliente Story' Recognized

The Agua Caliente Story: Remembering Mexico's Legendary Racetrack has been chosen as a 2005 Independent Publisher Book Award semifinalist in the sports category.

The winner and two finalists will be announced at BookExpo America in New York on June 3.

Written by David Jimenez Beltran and published by Eclipse Press, a division of Blood-Horse Publications, The Agua Caliente Story documents the history of the south-of-the-border racetrack that combined the elegance of an exclusive resort and the excitement of a popular nightclub. The likes of Seabiscuit and Phar Lap raced there, and several modern racing standards, such as safety helmets, starting gates, and exotic wagering, were first tested there.

"David Beltran has a deep and abiding affection for old Agua Caliente that dates to his childhood. His personal connection to the track makes his story of its colorful history and fascinating characters that much more vivid," said Jacqueline Duke, Eclipse Press editor.

Beltran, who grew up near Agua Caliente in Tijuana, delves into the track's rich history, paying homage to a forgotten era of racing. Historic photographs, some never before seen, richly illustrate the book.
